Should I give a guy in prison a chance?

Answers:

Dear Stary Eyed,

With all of the people out there, do you want to take the chance of dating a guy that has been in prison?

It is possible that someone can come out of prison a changed man. But again, do you want to take that chance?

Knowing the Real Person

Reader Snowcapybara I agree. I met dozens of rude and frightening people online before I found a wonderful person.

I am not a firm believer in these Internet relationships. Anybody can act however they want over the computer. The only way to get to know the real person is to spend time with them in person.

Prison Is a Bad Start

Judith I disgree. My fiancé has a criminal record.

My advice is this: Relationships are very difficult. It takes a lot of effort from both sides to make it work. To start off with someone that has been in prison is a bad start. It is problems from the beginning. You could've found me on the Internet and started having feelings for me. And I may not be such a prize.

Five Years Is Not a Weak Sentence

The chances are a guy that is in prison for 5 years (and that is not weak sentence) is going to make a good boyfriend or husband one day is unlikely.

Judith I believe that we are works in progress – anyone can change.

Put it this way: it is either this guy did something pretty serious to get 5 years and is a first time offender, OR he did something less serious but has a history of being in trouble with the law.

I was a probation officer, so I am not pulling this out of my ass.

Prisoners Are Bored and Desperate

You are going to have to break his heart, but do end it. For your sake. A person behind bars is bored and desperate and will most likely say anything to make you think highly of him. So listen – just don't drive yourself nuts – move on.

THERE ARE PLENTY OF FISH IN THE SEA, AND PLENTY OF FREE FISH, TOO!

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jimmy
