Why can't I have a relationship?

Judith Answers:

Sweetheart,

You Need Human Contact

Please go see a counselor. Most locations seem to have some free or low-cost services and I think it would be good for you to take advantage of them. And not a phone hot-line, or email service, or anything. An in-person contact.

Reader2 I have to disagree

EVERYONE needs human touch in their lives; the amount varies but things like hugging, holding hands, a hand placed on a shoulder, any kind of touch helps us keep us aware of our humanity and our connection to other people. A therapist can help you feel comfortable with this need and develop strategies for getting more human contact in your life through friends, family, and developing new relationships. It is very important that you understand that this is a rational human need.

Expand Your Contact

Are you in contact with family members? Do you work or go to school with other people? These are potential situations for you to expand human contact.

You will absolutely begin to develop relationships, both romantic and otherwise, if you think up some real strategies and have the support of a therapist and those who care about you.

Start with Chat Rooms

Charlie He doesn't have to go to chatrooms. He's got us, and we care.

While you are looking for a good therapist who can help you develop these strategies, I suggest one little strategy for feeling like part of the human community: start using chat rooms of people with similar interests. Whatever your interests are, chances are there are chat rooms and message boards for that interest.

I wouldn't recommend spending a good deal of time in them as your real need is the physical contact, but it will be a good starting place for the human connection you are seeking.
